Beaches, back
waters & boat races: Kerala is blessed with beautiful beaches and serene back
waters, which are among the most important tourist attractions
of the state. It is also known as the "land" of "lagoons &
beaches", as Kerala's 550KM long coastline is studded with
the world's best string of beaches. And along the coastal
plains is a vast network of lagoons, lakes, rivers and
canals, which provide excellent facilities for inland
navigation. A visit to this enchanting land is rendered
incomplete without taking a journey through these charming
backwaters.
The snake boat races
have attained a phenomenal popularity all over the world. The Nehru
Trophy Boat Race held at Alappuzha (the2nd Saturday of August, of every
year) and the Aranmula race at Aranmula are the major snake boat
racing events of the state.
Cuisine:
Kerala's mouth watering
cuisine is mildly flavoured and gently cooked. Pootu, is one of
the favorite breakfast dishes. It is rice flour dough
layered with grated coconut and steamed in a hollow bamboo
cylinder. Idlis and Dosas are also very popular in Kerala. During
the
Onam festival season opt for Onam lunch with Thoren,Kaalan ,&
Pachadi. Some other vegetarian dishes are Avial, a mixed vegetable
gravy dish with coconut and yogurt. Olen is a gravy dish made of
ash gourd and dry beans with the dominant flavour of coconut milk. No
meal in the state is complete without rice. Bananas are also an
important part of Kerala cuisine. Fish fry(Karimeen),stew made of
chicken and potatoes and Meenvevichathu ( fish in red chilly
sauce) are some of the favourite non-Vegetarian dishes.
