Trichur Pooram.

This is one of the most spectacular and colourful festivals of Kerala introduced during the reign of Sakthan Thampuram (1775-1790) the King/Raja of Cochin. It takes place in the cultural capital of Kerala ie; Trichur city. There is a temple of lord Siva(Vadakkunathan temple) in the centre of the city.It is surrounded by extensive grounds(Thekkinkadu grounds) where the festival takes place it is during the Malayalam month of Medom(April/May) on POORAM asterism - the day is the mythological birth day of Devi (goddess) who comes and visits Lord Siva on that day to pay her respects to him. There are several Devi temples in and around Trichur that take part in the festival. The main rival groups are Thiruvambadi and Paramekkavu who participate in friendly rivalry. The goddesses are brought in procession on colourfully decorated elephants to the accompaniment of drums, cymbals, horns & pipes. There will be drum ensembles which play for a couple of hours and attract a large crowd of connoisseurs. Around 200 drums play together and it is a wonder that they perform without a single mistake in their strokes on the drums. The biggest attraction for the common man is the display of FIRE WORKS (pyrotechnics) in the evening and early morning next day.Sky rocket burst spreading multicoloured light. The elephants carry brightly coloured parasols that are changed frequently. The various deities arrive on elephants numbering from one to fifteen. In the evening the participants of the 2 important sides Thiruvambadi & Paramekkavu compete to enhance Pooram‘s grandeur. Both teams field face to face arrays of richly caparisoned elephants with each side having fifteen elephants. Then “Kudamattam”, a competition in the swift and rhythmic changing of brightly coloured and sequined parasols is conducted. The sight of fifteen+fifteen parasols on both sides of attractive colours is wonderful.  Actually the festival lasts for about 36 hrs . There is some thing to watch all the time. There are similar festivals in various temples in this area during this season. They are also very attractive, though not as massive as Trichur Pooram.
